Duality
Dual means not one but
two.
Thoughts occur in pairs, never singular.
One - I
think I will eat some pepperoni pizza (Positive)
Two - I
hope I don't get indigestion (Negative) or
two alt
– I hope the Pizza Maker washed his hands after he came out of the
bathroom (Negative Alt)
etc.
One -
Let's take an airplane to Hawaii (Positive)
Two - I
hope we don't get Hi-Jacked (Negative) or
Two alt
– I hope the plane doesn't crash (Negative Alt))
etc.
One -
They have these cops on the plane to protect us (Positive)
Two - I
hope I don't get shot in the skirmish (Negative) or
Two alt
– A random bullet can go through the skin of the plane
depressurizing the cabin (Negative Alt)
etc.
One –
That woman I see in the bar is beautiful (Positive)
Two –
She probably doesn’t consider me her type (Negative)
Two alt
– She will probably laugh at me if I try to talk to her (Negative
Alt)
etc.
and so it goes through
your life.
It is a wonder you do
anything at all
with one foot on the
accelerator and the other pressing the brake.
Lots of noise and smoke
but little movement.
You can only achieve
motion by suppressing the negative (take your foot off the brake).
Suppression doesn't
eliminate the negative, it just pushes it below your awareness.
You don't have to be
conscious of the negative for it to be there
but you know it is
still there because you always feel an undercurrent of fear.
fear of
not feeling well
fear of
the loss of health
fear of
the loss of wealth
fear of
the loss of respect
fear of
being embarrassed
fear of
being killed
fear of
being blamed
fear of
being put to shame
fear of
being made to regret a choice that once seemed so right
fear of
being no one when you die
fear
that you will go to hell
fear
that there is no heaven
etc.
Sound familiar?
The millions of pairs
of opposites are actually polarized beliefs.
These beliefs constitute your ego
and your ego is who you
think you are.
It is your "me" in duality.
It is your "me" in duality.
Sounds pretty bleak? Well it is.

Duality is where you live
You may not know it yet but you live in a highly
polarized world of opposites which make up your world view. Now here
is the catcher. You think you can choose a single outward appearance
like “I'll be Mr. Nice Guy” and show the world how great you are
or “I'll be the sweet girl next door and win my true love.” Wrong! You forgot the opposites, "I'll be the Rotten Guy” or “I'll
Be the Nasty Lunatic Stalker Girl who will land my prey.” When you
create the positive belief you simultaneously create a negative belief that you don't want to be. How do you manage this
self deception? You act out the part you like and try to suppress the
part you don't want to show. It's a sort of a Doctor Jekyll and
Mister Hyde routine. The role that you try to play in life, at any
given moment, is created by you by adding a polarized belief to your
Ego. We will discuss the ego in a future post. Here is an important
point, it does not need to be true that you are a Mr. Nice Guy,
the belief can simply be created and you can give yourself a hundred
good reasons why this is so. These reasons can be false, it doesn't
matter. The belief takes hold along with hundreds of suppressed
negative beliefs. Sometimes we call the negative beliefs secret
doubts. I'm sure you have all had these doubts. They show up when
someone tells you what a great job you have done and you think to
yourself, "If they really knew, it was just dumb luck."
In your world, you believe the falsehoods you want
to believe and suppress the falsehoods you don't. You go through life seeking
praise for the acts that you have decided are favorable and avoid
anyone who points out any of your failings. This is done so you don't
have to see the falseness of the act you are putting on. This then is
the basic mechanism that takes place in real life interactions in the
duality. This is the nature of what you call reality or what could be
called the awake dream state, a state you will exist in until you awaken
from this duality in which you live. You see, the biggest falsehood
of them all is that you actually believe you are the ego. Until you
wake up from this illusion you are trapped in an existence that
always leads to pain and suffering. This is what Buddha discovered
about 2,500 years ago.
Buddha's Advice
Buddha advised his disciples in an address to them, a short time before he died, that an examination of reality would prove
fruitless for those seeking enlightenment (waking up from the ego)
because if a disciple spent all of his time trying to understand
reality, he would die before ever becoming enlightened. His advice
might have been sound for the era in which Buddha lived but remember,
some say that he died without producing a single fully enlightened
being from among his hundreds of followers. I do not wish to dispute
the fact that Buddha himself was an enlightened being but rather
bring to the attention of the reader that it is very difficult to
teach anyone how to become enlightened because a seeker often has
some very peculiar ideas about what enlightenment is. Also, to
add to the confusion, they are living within a reality that is false.
Almost everything about that reality is aimed at convincing them that
no other reality could possibly exist but the one they are
experiencing.
If a Buddha-like teacher tries to tell them that
outside this reality lies a greater reality that can be realized, they
will not be able to grasp the concept of an an out there. They might
think that the teacher means, “limitless outer space" where the
stars dwell or perhaps he means that out there is "heaven in the sky" or even more obscure, that out there means "inner space.” The
problem is that humans learn and extend their individual
understanding by attaching new ideas to something they already know.
But what if all they know is false and therefore wrong. Their basic
assumptions would be false and all of the conclusions derived from
these assumptions would likewise be false. How could a teacher teach
about a reality that is outside a student's reality unless the student
first goes through the process of unlearning the false
reality in which they live and then relearn the actual nature of the reality behind it all?
The concept of duality is not well understood even by
those that profess to to be experts in the subject. They use words
and symbols such as Yin-Yang, good and evil, right and wrong or God
and Satan to explain their interpretation of this concept. What if I
told you that the basis of the creation of reality is a dichotomy.
That all things (thoughts, feelings and objects) are created in pairs and further that the
only place where these things reside is in the mind. The implication
of this last statement is that reality exists only as a concept and
it is composed of a multitude of pairs of opposites.
A Little Bit of Evidence From Science
Here is a statement that has enormous
consequences. Every basic particle of matter, such as an electron or
a proton, has an anti-particle. In the case of an electron, it is the
positron which is exactly the same as the electron except it has a
positive charge. The proton has an anti-proton as its opposite. The
interesting thing about the particles and their anti-particles is
that if they were to come together, they would annihilate one another
giving off a burst of electromagnetic energy such as light, x-rays or gamma-rays depending on the mass of these particles. These particles
can be formed in a high energy nuclear device such as a linear
accelerator. According to Einstein, these particles are formed from
energy according to his famous equation E=mc2.
Since matter is composed of combinations of
electrons and protons, it stands to reason that anti-matter could
exist, constructed of positrons for electrons and anti-protons for
protons. The only proviso being that anti-matter could not co exist
alongside of normal matter or else an annihilation would take place, releasing the enormous energy that went in to creating the particles
in the first place and neither the matter nor anti-matter would
remain. In this first look at duality, we recognize that if an object
is to exist in our world, it must be kept away from anti-matter. If
there is an anti-matter earth, it would need to be far away from our earth
so the two do not interact. Fortunately, space is very large.
The next interesting scientific observation is
that in high energy reactions that give rise to positrons, it is
often the case that a positron-electron pair are simultaneously
produced. They each go flying off in different directions and so do
not destroy one another. The positron, however is short lived because
it soon encounters some stray electron and in the process undergoes
annihilation along with the unfortunate electron that it encountered.
A twinkle of energy is given off and the particles no longer exist.
Our world contains a plentiful supply of electrons and little or no
positrons unless we build machines to generate positrons in a local sense.
Is it possible that in creation, an equal supply
of basic particles and anti-particles exist except that they
are in universes that are very far apart and thus allow persistence
of universes? If this is the case, then an interesting conclusion
might be drawn. If we were to add up all the matter and anti-matter in
creation and suppose that they were allowed to annihilate each other,
all matter would cease to exist and only an enormous energy would
fill the void. This concept might answer the ancient question posed
by early Christian theologians, namely, how did God create something
from nothing? In Latin the expression creatio
ex nihilo
("creation out of nothing")
was used when addressing this issue. The answer is simply that it
still all adds up to nothing.
